Next up on our Supplier Spotlight, we chat to Kirsteen from Your Wedding at Loch Lomond, what a fabulous place to get married! I particularly love the photograph of the jetty onto the water posted below.
1. Introduce yourself and your company!
Our company is Your Wedding at Loch Lomond, which is an on-line wedding directory for brides to be getting married at Loch Lomond in Scotland. It is free to use and free to advertise in.
As for the people behind Your Wedding at Loch Lomond: Kirsteen is the co-founder and administrator, dealing with emails, website updates, social media etc. Kirsteen has a degree and several postgraduate qualifications. Colin is the other co-founder and also runs his own wedding photography company. Colin is the one who meets with the suppliers and who obviously takes our images. Colin has college and university qualifications as well as professional accreditation. Caroline is our graphic designer. She is responsible for our logo and our materials including our brochures. She also designs our newspaper and magazine adverts. She’s a star!
2. What made you start your company?
My husband Colin is a wedding photographer and since setting up his business in 2004, he has had a links page entitled ‘weddings at Loch Lomond’. In 2007, his web designer Brian suggested, as this page was getting too full, to set up a separate wedding directory website. We got talking with some local wedding suppliers and spent time finding out what they would want from a directory and planning how it would look etc. We discovered that many suppliers struggled to grow their businesses due to high costs of advertising and exhibiting. We decided to make the directory free to advertise in and not to profit from fellow suppliers.
3. Can you give us a typical ‘day in the life of’ – we’d love to know what you do day by day, even the what-might-seem-like-boring bits!
Today was a very busy day! It started with phoning some suppliers, followed by a meeting with a local venue, then lunch, then checking and sending emails, ordering some materials, updating facebook and twitter and writing tomorrow’s to do list!
4. What do you enjoy most or what is your favourite part of your job?
I get a real buzz from helping businesses to grow. I love hearing from suppliers that their enquiry numbers have increased as a result of advertising with us. We have a testimonials page on our website with just some of the comments.
5. How do you manage to mix your busy schedule with home and family life? Some secrets to your success please!
I used to have four jobs on the go, including this one but now its down to three ha ha. That’s three jobs for Kirsteen alone, in case you were wondering, and I’m not including being a mother in that! It is hard but we make it work by making the directory very much a team effort. This means we draw on the knowledge and expertise of our suppliers. They help us update the website, facebook etc, they promote us and attend meetings on our behalf. The telephoning aspect is hardest for me as I am hearing impaired and again, my suppliers help out with that aspect.
6. Do you manage to ever switch off the phone or laptop, or always sneakily checking emails and calls 24/7?
I’m guilty of constantly checking my messages on my iphone!
7. What top tip would you give couples that are getting married?
I see so many suppliers argue about what brides to be MUST do and who they MUST have as their supplier. It annoys me. Its YOUR day. Every bride to be has a different budget and a different vision. It doesn’t mean your day will be any less special.
Have a look at our website as we have a wide variety of suppliers from all price ranges and make your OWN decision as to which of them to go for.
8. If you’re already married, what one thing do you wish you’d done differently?
I’ve obviously looked back a lot on my wedding day since setting up Your Wedding at Loch Lomond and I think there are only two suppliers I wouldn’t use again, such as a piper who didn’t turn up (the venue knew another piper though!) There are a lot of trends now that weren’t popular when I got married and that was only five years ago! The trend for chair covers, whilst they look lovely, my wedding certainly didn’t suffer for not having them. I do wish I had known about candy buffets though, yum yum!
9. What has been your most unusual request and did you manage to fulfil it?
We have been asked to travel abroad to give presentations on our directory and the local area. This is something we very much want to do but is still in discussion.
